It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Benjamin F. Chavez, Sr. a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, and member of the Cubero community, who left us on Thursday, July 10, 2025, at the age of 63.
He was preceded in death by his father Daniel Chavez, Sr., mother Armelina Chavez, sisters: Helen Chavez, Esther Chavez, niece Barbara Ortega, great-niece Kimberly Vargas, sister-in-law Linda Chavez, and nephew Carlos Garcia.
Benjamin is survived by his brothers Daniel Chavez, Jr., and Kim Chavez, sisters: Jeanette Garcia (Benny), Elma Chavez, daughter Janelle Carrillo (Patrick Diwayan), sons: Joshua Chavez (Carlos Gutierrez), Benjamin Chavez, Jr. (Amber), Roman Lopez, grandchildren: Tristan Diwayan, Mya Rayne Diwayan, Koda Chavez, Tessa Chavez, Benjamin Chavez III, Monique Medina, Micheal Medina, Anabelle Medina, Karley Aragon , as well as nieces, nephews, great-nieces great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
Born on September 11, 1961, Benjamin was a dedicated individual known for his caring nature, selflessness, and unwavering commitment to his family and community. Benjamin had a multifaceted life enriched by his passions and interests. He was a devoted volunteer firefighter, demonstrating his commitment to serving others, and proudly served as the President of the land grant. His professional journey included working as a heavy equipment operator and later in public works, where he contributed significantly to his community.
A man of varied interests, Benjamin found joy in golfing, coaching children in baseball and basketball, and relished in the thrill of motorcycle rides, including memorable journeys to Oklahoma. He was an enthusiastic fan of the Cubero Tigers, and his love for warmth and connection made him the social club of his circle. Benjamin could often be found enjoying darts or listening to his favorite Spanish music and oldies, and his sweet tooth had a particular fondness for desserts. A resident of Cubero, he moved to Albuquerque with his son as his health began to decline.
Benjamin Chavez's impact on those around him was immeasurable, and he will be fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched, especially by his family, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. His spirit and kindness will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Benjamin's legacy will be honored through services, starting with a Visitation on July 17, 2025, at 4:00 PM at Our Lady of Light Catholic Church located at 17 Water Canyon Rd Cubero, 87014. Rosary will be recited at 6:00 PM. Final Viewing will be held on July 18, 2025, at 9:00 AM also at Our Lady of Light Catholic Church. Mass will commence at 10:00 AM. Benjamin will be laid to rest following the Mass at the Cubero Cemetery. Reception will follow the burial back at the church.
Pallbearers will be Dominic Sarracino, Zachary Carrillo, Anthony Aragon, Eric Chavez, Tristan Diwayan, Koda Chavez, Carlos Gutierrez, and Gabrielle Aragon.
