Born on March 26, 1935, Ernestine lived a life defined by passion, care, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys that create the tapestry of a life well lived. Raised by her mother, Martina, in the Barela’s neighborhood, they endured many hardships. She began working at a young age and met her future husband while on the job at Duran’s Pharmacy. Ernestine married Israel in 1953 and began raising her family in 1957. In 1961, they purchased their home in the Westgate neighborhood, where they raised all four of their children and lovingly cared for their grandchildren.

Throughout her life, Ernestine embraced a wide range of passions. She worked as a cosmetics consultant, a Tupperware dealer, a Jazzercise instructor, and was a dedicated political advocate for the disabled. Her curiosity, energy, and determination were evident in everything she pursued.

Her role as a caregiver to her daughter Monique was one of the most profound expressions of her boundless love and strength. For 54 years, Ernestine devoted herself fully to providing the best possible life for her daughter, demonstrating unwavering selflessness. Despite being a full-time caregiver, she always made time for her other children, family, and friends. Her son Louis remains deeply grateful for her steadfast support through every challenge he faced.

Sassy, headstrong, and deeply compassionate, Ernestine never shied away from controversy and stood firmly for what she believed in. Her strength was inseparable from her generous spirit and loving nature.

A culinary artist at heart, Ernestine was renowned for her remarkable cooking. Her handmade biscochitos, empanadas, and tortillas were cherished staples at family gatherings, and her husband’s favorite pineapple upside-down cake reflected her joy in nurturing others through food.

Ernestine’s passion for life was equally reflected in her sense of style. Her collection of clothes and shoes showcased her personal flair and confidence, which she carried with pride and elegance. She took great pleasure in presenting herself with grace and poise and, for most of her life, never left the house without being completely put together.

Ernestine lived a life that touched many, marked by love, generosity, and resilience. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those she cherished and in the countless lives enriched by her presence. As we say farewell to this remarkable woman, we celebrate a life as vibrant and spirited as the dishes she crafted with love. Though she will be deeply missed, Ernestine’s legacy of passion, strength, and devotion will continue to inspire us all.
