Evelyn Joyce Menzies, 87, a beacon of love and kindness, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 14, 2025, in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, surrounded by her loving family..

Evelyn was preceded in death by her devoted husband Alfred “Sonny” Menzies, parents Richard and Hazel (Harris) Wildman, siblings: Richard Wildman, Henrietta Williams, Rosemarie Laurencin, and Franklin Wildman.

Evelyn is survived by her sister Sheila Monfort of Long Beach, New York; daughter Patricia and son-in-law Michael Lawton; sons: Philippe Menzies, Steven Menzies and daughter-in-law Melissa Salazar; grandchildren: Michael Lawton, Marlyss Miller (Terry), Kristen Sullivan (Patrick), Jonah Salazar y Tafoya, Elijah Salazar Menzies (Cristiana Nava), Cristoni Sullivan; great grandchildren: Amirah, Chrishan, Kaliyah, Amari, Sarai, Hezekiah, also many nieces and nephews.

Her life was marked by her unwavering compassion and wisdom that touched the hearts of everyone she knew.

Evelyn was born on May 25, 1938, in Brooklyn, New York. She was influenced greatly by strong matriarchs, her mother Hazel and grandmother Henrietta Hepburn Harris, who laid the foundation for a life rich in family values and simple pleasures. Her father, Richard, passed away unexpectedly when Evelyn was just eleven, leaving behind his young family. This early tragedy and the challenges it presented would forge and temper Evelyn into a strong and resilient woman.

In her teenage years, Evelyn spent her summers working at Tilvic Lodge in Saratoga Springs, New York, earning money to help provide clothing and necessities for herself and siblings. It was there in world-famous Saratoga Springs that Evelyn was introduced to the sport of horse racing. Over the years, she continued to watch the big races on television, never forgetting the excitement and spectacle she experienced as a younger woman. She periodically placed a few dollars on the derbies she continued to follow.

Evelyn often shared fond memories of grand gatherings at her home on 909 Avenue M in Brooklyn. She recounted stories of family and friends, many of whom immigrated from the West Indies, filling the rooms of their home with laughter and joy. It was at one of those gatherings that she met Sonny, the great love of her life. This match, a match made in heaven, joined and created an extended family that endures today. The couple’s shared principles of compassion for others, love and respect for all, and their deep faith in God was imparted to their family.

Evelyn graduated with a degree in nursing in 1958 from the Saint Joseph School of Nursing in Yonkers, NY. She worked as a nurse at Brooklyn General Hospital and Kings Park Hospital in Long Island. During a brief break from nursing, Evelyn worked as a substitute teacher in elementary school education. However, her passion for nursing won over, and she returned to nursing and social work. Throughout her career she dedicated herself to the health and well-being of children in children’s homes and foster care.

Evelyn, Sonny, and their family began vacationing in New Mexico in 1977, after her mother, brother Franklin and wife Sally left Brooklyn to live in Albuquerque. In 1992, Evelyn and Sonny retired and relocated to Rio Rancho, where they remained throughout their lives.

A devoted mother and grandmother, Evelyn’s priority was always the well-being of her family. She was the epitome of a matriarch, always ensuring that her loved ones had everything they needed. Her home was a sanctuary of warmth and care, where laughter and love were never in short supply. Evelyn’s family was her everything, and she was their steadfast rock, guiding them through life’s challenges with grace and wisdom.

Evelyn and Sonny welcomed extended family and friends to their New Mexico home throughout the decades. Evelyn created themed bedrooms named “The Victorian Room,” “The Southwest Room,” “The Doll Room,” and “The Blue Room.” Visitors often requested a particular room when they revisited.

Evelyn’s culinary tastes were simple. A plate of mac and cheese at home or a meal at Red Lobster, Olive Garden, or Denny’s brought her immense pleasure as it was always shared in the company of family and friends. Her presence at the dinner table will be missed deeply, but her family takes solace in the cherished memories of meals and conversations shared with her, especially at her kitchen table where she held court in her favorite chair as our matriarch. These precious moments with our mother were profound experiences of unconditional love.

Christmas was Evelyn’s favorite time of the year, and the tradition of sending Christmas cards that her husband enjoyed doing never ceased after his passing. A unique and endearing aspect of Evelyn’s character was her penchant for collecting. Pig knickknacks adorned her home, each piece holding a special place in her heart. In her later years, she also amassed an impressive collection of salt and pepper shakers, a testament to her appreciation for the small joys in life.

To describe Evelyn as forgiving, loving, and compassionate would be an understatement. Her capacity to forgive was boundless, teaching all who knew her the power of reconciliation and love. Her kindness knew no limits, and her wisdom was a guiding light for many. Evelyn’s legacy is one of love and kindness, virtues that will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched.

Evelyn’s life was a tapestry woven with the threads of love, care, and generosity. As we bid farewell to this remarkable woman, we are reminded of the impact one life can have on so many. Evelyn Joyce Menzies will be missed dearly, but her spirit will forever remain a comforting presence in the lives of her family and friends.

Thank you for all the prayers and support from family, friends, and neighbors. Thank you to Harmony Hospice and all the caring nurses. Lastly, no words can express the gratitude for the compassion, care, and assistance of niece Michelle Monfort and Sherrie Sullivan (Kristen’s mother-in-law).

Rest in peace, Mom. Your love and light will shine on eternally.
