Henry Aloysius Chavez

Henry Aloysius Chavez passed away after a long illness on Sunday, October 19, 2025 at the age of 83.

Henry was preceded in death by his mother Frances Lucero Chavez, father Alfred S. Chavez, Sr., and older sister Christina T. Chavez Bayless.

He is survived by his son Marcos Chavez; grandsons: Marcos Jacobo Chavez, Mikko Monroe Chavez; younger siblings: Carmela Bernadette Chavez, Juanita Chavez Baca, both of Albuquerque; Alfred S. Chavez, Jr. "Fred" of Albuquerque, Jose Evaristo Chavez "Tito" of Las Vegas N.M., Santiago R. Chavez "Jaime" of Taos, and Frank X. Chavez "Kiko" of Plano, Texas, and numerous first cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He was a proud veteran of the Cold War having served in a U.S. Army intelligence unit in Germany in the mid-1960s. He had a passion for serving his community—the Barelas neighborhood of Albuquerque—for many years. He was born in Albuquerque in 1942 but grew up in several New Mexico communities—Carrizozo, Belen, Estancia, Taos, Bernalillo, and San Juan Pueblo (Ohkay Owingeh) between 1943 and 1956, where his father served the State of New Mexico with the Department of Public Welfare. He was a resident of the Barelas neighborhood since his family moved back to Albuquerque in 1956 and was a devout member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He attended the University of New Mexico, graduating in 1974.

Henry enjoyed reading, especially science fiction, and followed current events closely. He loved the outdoors, gardening, and fishing.

He will be greatly missed by so many whose lives he touched throughout his 83 years.
