Born on March 19, 1947, in Los Angeles, Irene lived a life marked by resilience, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to her community. She was a teacher at heart and deeply loved the opportunity to educate children and guide them toward brighter futures. Her kindness and patience touched many young lives, and she found great meaning in helping others learn, grow, and believe in themselves. Education remained important to her throughout her life, and she was proud to have earned her GED later in life before continuing on to college, a reflection of her determination and belief that it is never too late to pursue one’s goals.

Those who knew Irene will remember her as a woman who gave generously of herself. She was always looking for ways to give back, and her concern for others extended far beyond her immediate circle. After the tragic murder of her son, she transformed her grief into action by starting the group Mothers Against Gang Violence. Through that effort, she became a voice for awareness, healing, and change, offering strength to others who had experienced similar pain. Her courage in the face of loss stood as a powerful example of how love and purpose can endure even in the most difficult circumstances.

Irene was known for her feisty spirit, her determination, and the way she stood her ground when she believed in something. She was caring and steadfast, with a personality that could be both strong and warm. She spoke her mind, defended what mattered to her, and never backed away from a challenge. At the same time, she had a generous heart and a deep tenderness for the people and causes she loved. Her presence left an impression, and her family and friends will remember her for the strength she carried and the love she shared so freely.

She also found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Irene loved dancing to oldies, and music brought her happiness and energy. She enjoyed collecting items with bees, cherubs, Día de los Muertos imagery, and anything her children made for her, treasures that reflected both her personality and her devotion to her family. She also appreciated cultural items, including Chicano art, which spoke to her identity and heritage. These collections were more than possessions to her, as they were expressions of beauty, memory, and meaning.

Irene was also a devoted sports fan and followed the 49ers, Bulls, Dodgers, and UCLA with enthusiasm. Whether cheering for her favorite teams or sharing her opinions about a game, she brought the same passion to sports that she brought to every part of her life. Her interests reflected her spirited nature and her love for traditions, loyalty, and community. The beach was a calm an serene place for Irene and she loved to be by the water.

She will be remembered with love and admiration by all who were fortunate enough to know her. Irene R. Ballejos lived with purpose, faced hardship with courage, and gave her heart to the people and causes that mattered most to her. Her life was a testament to perseverance, compassion, and the enduring power of a woman who never stopped fighting for what she believed in. Though she is no longer with us, her influence, her example, and her memory will remain in the hearts of many.
