Justinanano “Justie” Martinez, a cherished soul known for his wit and vibrant spirit, passed away peacefully with his daughter at his side on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at the age of 92.
He was preceded in death by his wife Priscilla Martinez, grandson Christopher Lynn Sanchez, mother Rita Montoya, sisters: Nancy Armstrong, Martha Silva, brothers: Benny and Profidio “Gege”.
Justie is survived by his daughter Pamela “Pammy” Soto, son-in-law Samuel “Sam” H. Soto, Jr., granddaughter Veronica Sanchez, grandson Andrew Sanchez and his partner Victoria Romero, and their children (great-grandchildren): Emmet Sanchez, Maisie Sanchez, sister Katie Rodarte and several nieces and nephews.
Born on February 3, 1933, in the heart of the Los Griegos community, Justie's life was as rich and colorful as the landscapes of his childhood.
From a young age, Justie was an embodiment of joy and determination. He grew up with the Rio Grande River as his backyard, where he would often be found swimming and embracing the simplicity of nature. His love for the outdoors extended to his own home, where he devoted countless hours to working around the house and tending to his flowers, creating an oasis that reflected his passion for life and taking on swimming at the gym as a hobby.
Justie's interests were as diverse as the gardens he nurtured. He relished in the simple pleasures of a bologna sandwich with green chile, a testament to his New Mexican roots and enjoyed a banana split from time to time. His culinary favorites also included hearty hamburgers, papas de caldito, green chile stew, and an array of veggies and fruits, each dish a celebration of his love for food and family gatherings. Lastly, no day was complete without his morning coffee, always with cream and sugar and his three meals for the day.
A collector at heart, Justie held onto pictures, knick-knacks, and paintings that each told a story of a moment in time. These treasures were more than just objects; they were a chronicle of his journey, his heritage, and the memories he cherished.
Justie witnessed the transformation of Los Griegos from lush trees and vast lands to a community bustling with housing developments. Through these changes, he remained a steadfast figure, often sharing stories of the old days with humor and a touch of nostalgia.
Known for his quick wit and humor, Justie could light up any room with his funny anecdotes and playful jokes. His impatience and outspoken nature were part of his charm, a reflection of a man who lived life on his own terms and never hesitated to speak his mind.
As we bid farewell to Justie, we remember a man who lived fully, loved deeply, and left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him. His legacy is one of laughter, resilience, and an unwavering zest for life. Justie Martinez will be profoundly missed, yet his spirit will continue to inspire us every day. May he rest in peace, surrounded by the beauty he so adored in life.
