Melba Cecelia Olona, 97, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 26, 2026 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 67 years Orlando R. Olona, parents Ben and Anita Dimas; sons: Timothy Olona, Steve Olona, and Tom, Olona.
Melba is survived by her children: Jerry Olona, Catherine Olona, Michael Olona, Arthur Olona, Mark Olona, Sophia Olona, Nick Olona, Paul Olona, Jeff Olona; three beautiful siblings, that are all in their 90's: Peggy Sanchez, Jimmie Dimas, Pauline Olona Hernandez; 20 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren, as well as many Dimas and Olona nieces, nephews, very close friends: Helen Trujillo, Terry Lucero, and Lydia Paiz. She also leaves behind her Catholic church friends -- they were her prayer warriors in her life, and in her community.
Melba was born on September 7, 1928, in Albuquerque, New Mexico to Ben and Anita Dimas. She grew up in Albuquerque's North Valley at the time when Fourth Street was a dirt road leading to downtown Albuquerque. As the wife of a World War II U.S. veteran who served 22 years, she embraced the demands of a military family while raising 12 children. Those years took the family to Germany, Panama, and several states across the United States. Following her husband's retirement from the military service in 1964, Melba returned to the North Valley, where she lived for 62 years until her passing.
Melba's greatest legacy to her 12 children was the deep and lasting faith she lived each day and passed on through her unwavering love for God. Rooted in prayer and humility, she gave unconditional love and support to her children and grandchildren, leaving a blessing that remains in their hearts. Melba never ended a conversation without making each person feel valued and uplifted. She never let anyone leave her home without giving them the "family blessing."
The Olona family extends their deepest gratitude to the care staff, doctors, and nurses at the University of New Mexico Hospital, including the Burn Specialists Unit, the Adult ICU teams, the 4-South Unit, and 2-East Unit. Their compassion and professional care of Melba was impeccable, as well as their kindness and support for the Olona family during the difficult month of August.
She will be remembered with love by all who knew her and by the many lives she touched throughout her long life. Her memory will remain a blessing to her family and friends.
Melba's Life Celebration will begin with a Rosary to be recited on Monday, September 14, 2026, at 6:30pm at Salazar Mortuary located at 400 Third St. SW, 87102.
