Merenciana "Mary" Duran, departed this world on Saturday, August 30, 2025, leaving behind a rich legacy of love, generosity, and devotion. At the age of 99, she graced the lives of family and friends with her vibrant spirit and indomitable will.
She was preceded in death by her father Eleuterio Duran, mother Maria Duran; sisters: Porfira Duran, Alberta Sandoval and husband John, brother Carlos Duran and wife Jennie Duran; nephew Vincent Duran.
Merenciana is survived by her nieces: Rita Romero, Barbara Lopez and husband Joe Lopez; nephews: Dennis Duran Stanley Duran; grand-nieces and grand-nephews and loving friends
Born on June 15, 1926 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Throughout her life, Merenciana was known for her many interests and hobbies. A passionate gardener, she delighted in nurturing her plants, finding solace and beauty in nature. Her love for bowling brought her numerous awards, each a testament to her competitive spirit and skill. She embraced her faith wholeheartedly, lending her voice to the church choir, and found joy in being an ardent supporter of her beloved local sports teams, especially the Albuquerque Lobos and the ABQ Dukes baseball team. An enthusiastic football fan, she had a special admiration for the talents of Tiger Woods in golf.
Family meant everything to Merenciana. She shared a profound bond with her sisters, reflecting her loving and nurturing heart. She often took care of her mother and siblings, embodying the values of generosity and kindness that were central to her character. Traveling with her Sisters with the senior center was one of her great joys, allowing her to explore the world and create lasting memories.
Merenciana was known for her stylish attire, often favoring a well-put-together look complemented by her signature short hair. Although she was a picky eater and preferred not to spend much time in the kitchen, her fondness for red chile and tamales remains an endearing aspect of her culinary preferences.
Merenciana's remarkable 40-year career with State of New Mexico showcased her dedication and diligence. She approached her work with the same headstrong determination that characterized other aspects of her life, earning the respect of those who had the privilege of working alongside her. Her best friend, Emma, shared many of these treasured moments, their friendship a testament to the bonds that can uplift and support us throughout our lives.
As we reflect on the life of Merenciana Duran, we celebrate not only her many accomplishments and interests but also the profound love she extended to those around her. She will be sorely missed but fondly remembered for the light she brought into every room and the kindness she shared throughout her remarkable journey.
Merenciana's Life Celebration will begin with a Visitation on Thursday, September 18, 2025, at 5:00pm at Salazar Mortuary located at 400 Third St. SW, 87102. Rosary will be recited at 6:00pm. Mass will be held on Friday, September 19, 2025, at 10:00am at San Ignacio Catholic Church located at 1300 Walter St. NE, 87102. Merenciana will be laid to rest following the Mass at Mount Calvary Cemetery located at 1900 Edith Blvd. NE, 87102.
Pallbearers will be Nicholas Duran, Phillip Duran, Edward Lopez, Andrew Lopez, Jerome Montoya, and Stanley Duran.
