From the early morning sun's first light, Shawna embraced each day with zest and vigor, embodying the spirit of an early bird. Her passion for the outdoors was evident in her love for hiking, where she found solace and strength in the embrace of nature's beauty. Shawna's adventurous soul led her to explore the wonders of the world, both in reality and through the fantastical realms of Sci-Fi movies and thought-provoking documentaries, which she adored.

Shawna's social nature was the heartbeat of her community. Her laughter was infectious, her conversations, a blend of wisdom and wit. She had the unique ability to make everyone feel like they were the most important person in the room. Her love for pow-wow and classic country music resonated through her, an auditory expression of her rich cultural tapestry and her joyful spirit.

In the kitchen, Shawna found joy in cooking for her children, often bringing comfort and love to the table through her favorite meals. Her signature dish was her beloved tater-tot-casserole, a family favorite that never failed to bring smiles. When she wasn’t cooking, Shawna enjoyed venturing out to find the perfect cup of potato soup or French onion soup, savoring the warmth and simplicity in every bite.

Professionally, Shawna soared. She took great pride in her career with Indian Health Services, where she served faithfully for 21 years as a Patient Benefits Coordinator. In this role she helped others with compassion and care, a true reflection of her selfless nature. Yet, her ultimate purpose, her true calling, was motherhood. Providing for her children and striving to be the best mom was her unwavering mission. She offered continuous love and support, encouraging her children to chase their dreams and pursue higher education, always reminding them they could accomplish anything they set their minds to.

Shawna's personal style was marked by her collection of jackets, shoes, and clothes, each piece a chapter in her vibrant story. Her bright smile was her signature, a radiant symbol of her passionate and resilient soul. Shawna navigated through life's adversities with a strength that inspired all who knew her, a strength that was gentle yet unyielding.

She lived a life that encouraged others to rise, to embrace the dawn of each new day with hope and determination. Shawna's legacy is not one of sorrow but of celebration—a celebration of a life lived fully, a life that will continue to motivate and uplift in the hearts of those she touched.

Today, we honor Shawna, an Oglala Lakota woman whose journey was a radiant example of the beauty of a life well-lived. Her spirit, steadfast like the buffalo that roams the plains, embodied strength, endurance, and sacred connection to family and community. Rooted in the traditions of her people, she carried herself with humility, kindness, and grace–embodying the Lakota values of respect and generosity. Her legacy reminds us that with adventure, selflessness, and heart, we too can leave an indelible mark on this world.
