Tranquilino "TJ" Barela, a beloved figure in the communities of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Pomona, California, passed away on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at the age of 84.

He was preceded in death by his beautiful, devoted wife of 33 years Concepcion “Connie” Barela; parents, Jose Dario and Benita Barela; brothers: Ray Barela, Alex Barela, Joe Barela; and sister Susie Sanchez.

TJ is survived by his children: Valerie Barela (Arnold), Jose Dario Barela (Catherine), Lawrence Barela (Yvette), Tanya Blewett (Jacob), Catherine “Cathy” Loya (Arturo), Enrique “Jesse” Cardiel (Karen), Shawn Storey; eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren; also many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Born on September 8, 1940, TJ lived a life filled with countless memories, adventures, and accomplishments that have left a lasting impact on those who knew him. TJ proudly served his country as a veteran of the Navy, and the Air/Army National Guard embodying the dedication and commitment that are hallmarks of a true patriot. His military service was but one of many achievements throughout his life. Known for his vibrant spirit and love of camaraderie, he cherished moments spent playing various sports such as softball, bowling, and horseshoes. He particularly found joy in fishing and camping, relishing any opportunity for adventure, especially if it meant jumping into someone's car for a spontaneous trip.

A devoted family man, TJ considered his wife and children to be his greatest success in life. Their happiness was paramount to him, and he took immense pride in the experiences they shared, including memorable fishing trips; trips to see the Dodgers and trips to Disneyland that will be treasured by his family for generations to come. His deep-rooted love for family was mirrored in the connections he fostered, always caring for others and holding onto every cherished memento and shared moment.

Throughout his life, TJ found joy in the simple pleasures—he was an ardent fan of the Dodgers and Raiders, enjoying the thrill of each game while sharing a cold Budweiser with friends and loved ones.

He also had a profound appreciation for the rich culture of New Mexico, often tuned into the country's various stations & KANW 89.1 music station, letting the melodies feed his soul.

Significant locations, such as the Garcia’s Kitchen Express in Taylor Ranch (Staff), the mountains, and Barela’s Coffee House held a special place in his heart, marking the backdrop of many family gatherings and joyful occasions.
