Jose "Joe" Y. Lopez passed away on Tuesday, June 8, 2021 in Albuquerque, New Mexico at the age of 71.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents Helen and Pedro Lopez; wife Catherine Lopez; and son Emmette Castillo.
He is survived by his children: Larry Harding, Antoinette Baca, Denicia Tapia; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sister Matilda Lopez; brother Antonio Lopez; three nephews and one niece.
Joe was born in Silver City and resided in Santa Rita until the mid 60’s when his family moved to Silver City. He graduated from Cobre High School in 1969. That same year he joined the United States Navy. He was stationed onboard the USS Bon Homme Richard, which was bombarded, after which he was reassigned to the USS Oriskany. He did a tour in Viet Nam. Upon his return home Joe made Albuquerque his home and was employed at the New Mexico Department of Labor in the Unemployment Claims Department for a few years. He then became employed with the City of Albuquerque Family and Community Centers. Being a talented artist he left his mark on every center with cartoon murals and inspiring verses adorning the walls of every community center he was assigned to.
Joe's Life Celebration will begin with a Visitation on Sunday, June 20, 2021 at 3:00 p.m. at Salazar Mortuary located at 400 Third St SW, 87102. Rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. Final Viewing will be held on Monday, June 21, 2021 at 8:30 a.m. at Salazar Mortuary. Mass will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church located at 309 Stover Ave. SW, 87102. A reception will follow the Mass at Salazar Mortuary inside Salazar Mortuary's Event Center. We will proceed from Salazar Mortuary at 12:00 pm to the Santa Fe National Cemetery for the Committal Service scheduled at 1:30 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Justin Baca, Tony Lopez, Jr., Larry Lower, John Hausermann, Jr., John Hausermann, Sr., and Terrian Lopez.
Honorary Pallbearer will be Kevin Baca.
