Tony J. Zamora Obituary

Tony J. Zamora, 91, passed away on Thursday, May 12, 2022.

Tony was preceded in death by his parents Eubaldo and Adelina Zamora; his loving wife Irene B. Zamora; siblings: Eubaldo Zamora, Jr., Adeline Gallegos (Johnny), Emily Alexander (Steve), Robert Zamora (Barbara), Felix Zamora (Maggie), Mamie Garcia (Larry) and Jane Gurule (Al).

Tony is survived by his six children: Bill "Bear" Zamora, Patricio "PAZ" Zamora (Rita), Tomas A. Zamora (Yolanda), Monica Serna (John), Janet Zamora-Moya (Eugene), Maria Elena Zamora (Jose Munguia).  He was also blessed with sixteen grandchildren and twenty-two great grandchildren.

Antonio Jose Cayetano Zamora, was born November 21, 1930 in Old Town, Albuquerque, New Mexico.

“Tony”, “Uncle Tony”, “Grandpa Tony” was a man who carried four generations on his shoulders. His house was open to all who crossed his doorstep as he extended a warm welcome and embodied the statement, “mi casa es su casa”. Family was held dear and everyone was family.

Tony’s early years were filled with doing for others, including being a Boy Scout Leader and working plumbing with his father-in-law Jake Baca. He held several accounting roles throughout the state, including working on base, Reynolds Electric Co. and PNM.  He went on to work in the State Auditor’s Office and was the Assistant Import/Export Manager for the State of NM and worked closely with the Mexican Government.

Tony was heavily involved in politics, being instrumental in the Senator Pete Domenici campaign and numerous high profile elections in the state. Tony was known for turning out the votes and huge crowds for vital concerns, such as his beloved Old Town community and speaking out against police brutality in the 70’s. He was a founding member for both the Chicano movement in NM and the Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce.

Although Tony traveled extensively during his career, he was a devoted husband and father and always made time for his six children and his beloved wife Irene. Tony opened Zamora Realty and Construction with his brothers in the 70’s and remained actively working well into his 80’s in the real estate arena.

Tony’s strong Catholic Faith provided a firm foundation, upon which he built throughout his life. From Marriage Encounter, to cursillo, to the ACTS apostolate, his faith was at the core of all he did. He shared this rich faith tradition with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Each and every one of whom knew his love for them and he was equally cherished by all.
